Quick Facts: Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong
- A division of the University of Rochester Medical Center and located within Strong Memorial Hospital, the 124-bed Golisano Children’s Hospital is the area's only children's hospital, and serves as the referral center for all seriously ill or injured children from the 17-county Finger Lakes region.The hospital is committed to treating all children regardless of their family’s ability to pay—and, as one of 170 Children’s Hospitals affiliated with the national, not-for-profit Children's Miracle Network (CMN), 100 percent of all locally-made donations work locally. - Construction of the “pediatric-use-only” William & Mildred Levine Surgical Suite began in August 2005. The hospital performs close to 30,000 pediatric surgeries annually; from now on, these children will be allowed to keep close to their parents almost every moment that they are not in actual surgery.
- The Children's Heart Center is the only center in Western New York that offers a full range of interventional procedures for patients with congenital heart disease. The center sees 7,000 patients a year and provides the latest in technologies and techniques, including pediatric echocardiography services (that offer the most advanced imaging available) and a pediatric catheterization program.
- The 52-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is rated a level-IIID facility—the highest in AAP and state designation and the only one of its kind in the Finger Lakes Region. Providing the highest quality of care for sick and premature babies, the NICU admits 1,200 newborns each year— or about 8 percent of all local births. Most of these babies are born at Strong Memorial Hospital, which serves as the Regional Perinatal Center for high risk obstetrical service.
- Andrew J. Kirch Developmental Services Center is a multidisciplinary program providing quality, individualized evaluations and services to families, community groups and professionals that care for children with developmental delays and disabilities.
- Golisano Children’s Hospital’s is proud to partner with local Ronald McDonald House Charities to offer the Ronald McDonald House within the Hospital. The House— which is only the fourth of its kind in the world, and the first in the Eastern U.S.— offers respite to parents that need to be close those children in the most critical conditions.
- Golisano Children’s Hospital’s faculty consists of 137 M.D., PhD, or M.D. /PhD with secondary appointments in the Department of Pediatrics, as well as close to 200 physicians from the community (serving as voluntary faculty).
- The Pediatric Links with the Community (PLC) program encourages resident pediatricians to go beyond their clinical office hours by collaborating with community health organizations.
- The University of Rochester’s Department of Pediatrics research programs are empowered by over $22 million in grant money, and rank as one of the top 20 in the nation.
- Promising studies include:
- investigation into the mechanism and prevention of lung damage resulting from the microorganism, pneumocystis carinni
- exploration of how red blood cells form both in the embryo and later on in development
- partnership with the National Children’s Oncology Group to test specific therapies for various forms of pediatric cancer
- implementation of telemedicine technologies in daycares and elementary schools, electronically connecting ill children with primary-care physicians
- the elimination of disparity of immunization rates and healthcare to the poor
